I received this book for free and I love Cheryl Bradshaws books especially the Sloane Monroe series. I really enjoyed this book True Crime author Alexa Weston was found murdered at a book signing site. Joss Jax another crime author and a reality TV show host on crimes visited Alexa Weston the night Alexa died. Joss being a fellow crime author herself feels compelled to solve the murder of Alexa Weston. Alexa had major success writing about Elias Pratt a serial killer. Alexa is writing another book, read to learn why someone could be worried about this new book. The story flows along nicely and has some great twists to it, also learn of a few major secrets that have been kept.
This book lacks something in the final delivery of the mystery that the author's Sloane Monroe mysteries have, Don't get me wrong, this is a very good book that progresses along well, but the conclusion seems a little awkward to me. It's well worth the read and if you are a Cheryl Bradshaw fan you should read it for yourself and see what you think. But when the villain is identified Voss, who narrates her story, tells of things she did leading up to her conclusion and in her investigation she never did these things. Also, this book keeps jumping back and fourth across twenty years and I really don't enjoy a book doing that because it simply muddles the continuity of the storyline when you aren't able to read large blocks of the book in each sitting. Therefore after not reading for several hours I pick up the book and sometimes have to go back several pages to remind myself what year I am reading and who is involved, something I rarely have to do. Still, its worth the read if you lke the author.
This is an awesome book! Lots of twists and turns and the characters were so almost as evil as Elias! I could not put it down it drew me in and kept reading until quite late. Alexandra Weston and Joss Jaxxs were delightful and shadowy in their plots. But to realize who the actual murderet was a surprise for me I was totally wrong. You just have to read it!!
This book doesnt disappoint at all. It was a great read and I was actually shocked by who did it. In most books you can normally tell who did it but I had no clue on this one. I hope there's more books with Joss that will be coming out. Love the fact she didn't give up and kept trying to find the answers she needed. I would recommend this book to everyone.
Perhaps, as a police officer, I shouldn’t read books about my own profession. I can’t believe people think this is what police work is like. I mean a full squadron of officers burst in to arrest a murderer, and one tells the other to call 911? So, police don’t communicate to dispatch via radio anymore?

Besides that, I found the characters annoyingly predictable. In real life, good people can be “bad guys” and bad people can be “good guys.” In this book, everyone fits neatly in a box.

I’ve read a lot of fiction books, and a lot of murder novels that I genuinely enjoyed. This was not one of them. I won’t be picking up Cheryl Bradshaw again anytime soon.
I'm obviously going against the stream here, and am a bit surprised to see all of the five star reviews.

The basic premise of this book makes no sense. The main character, Jax, meets the murder victim once, a few minutes before Alexandria is killed. This single meeting motivates Jax to feel she must track down the killer. Police? Who needs the police? Jax is uniquely qualified to catch the killer...why? Is she a detective? A criminologist? A psychic? No, she hosts a reality show about catching killers. When a policewoman challenges her qualifications, it's obvious that the officer is jealous of Jax. When a detective begins to think that maybe Jax should not be aggressively questioning people, the victim's daughter immediately insists that she won't talk to anyone but Jax.

I could have ignored the unlikely plot devices, but the truth of the matter is that I quickly grew to dislike Jax. She's in a bar, sees a man take off his wedding ring, and feels compelled to encourage him to hit on her so that she can get into a fight with the man (and have her bodyguard defend her). Going to the victim's funeral her first observation is that "Most of the funeral attendees were nobodies." Any why I continued to read after that point is anybody's guess.
I did read this book to the end. However, I had to suspend my disbelief to do so. Come on, Joss Jax, a true crime writer and tv personality waltzes into a homicide investigation and gets access to the lead detective, who readily shares information they are processing from the crime scene (even updates her!!!)?? Then she zips around to all the possible suspects and families and interviews them, even multiple times, with no real resistance?? Really? Sure they complain, but then they go ahead and tell all!
I think if Ms. Bradshaw had created her character to be at least a private eye, if not a detective working this case, it would have been a much more believable book. I would have even forgiven the incident where a character sustains 2 gunshot wounds to the chest, and it was presented as not a big deal. I kept thinking they would reveal that character had a bullet proof vest on, but no such luck. geesh!
Another problem I had with the book was the resolution. We got a surprise twist at the end, and no real clues or backstory that would make that twist believable.
I know Ms. Bradshaw is an accomplished author, and the book showed she could keep the plot moving well. There were just way too many things that just would never happen in real life.
Maybe I am just tired of the female leads in these mysteries being gorgeous, headstrong, willful, and "only willing to do it their way", protagonists. It has become a tiresome cliche.
