At first it looked like a historical novel but by the end of it i would rather call it a sketch to a historical novel. A lot of good work in fact collecting and finding an interesting period not very well known; but the job of putting this together in an account with characters with personality remains unfinished. This lack of depth in characters does not connect me to the story and it then becomes a summary of movements and tactics. Also the large amount of grammatical errors, or just typing errors makes it difficult for me to enjoy. I am not a fanatic of grammar and not either specially good in english and i think that if I react upon this it must be a pain in the B.. For many more. Please fix this for your sake if not mine! An example location 4393 in kindle: augsburg was attacked on the 7 th and completed destroyed.Same page: he was noticeable pale.

This novel is strictly for fans of military strategy! The Romans are just better at it than the barbarians. There is no good or bad guy here!
A great conclusion to a wonderful story. It took a while for the plot to build up but the latter part of the book made up for it. My only distractions were the many spelling mistakes and grammatical errors. I would hazard a guess that the editing staff was different to those of the first instalment, otherwise a good read. Plus volunt.
Besides weaving of interesting plot lines. The author provides believable characters for the time and places. Author Timmes mixes the historical facts with fiction making all three of the books in this series a great read.
A good read. Not only does the author tell about the Romans, but also the people on the other side of the gladius. Good landscape descriptions, using names we're familiar with, making it easier to place where the battles actually took place. Very good read, with a side of geography and history.
The story is competently written and follows the real history of the event very well. I did however find the story line predictable and just not very exciting. Somehow I was expecting some exciting twists and turns. The Teutons appeared to be smarter and better prepared to take on the Romans in the beginning, but by the time the Romans show up, they are presented as just another band of unprepared barbarians and are predictably soundly beaten. Maybe it is true, but it makes the final battles boring.
As a long term reader of classical history and Roman history particularly, I was delighted to see these two excellent works by Thomas Timmes, about Legio XVII Roman Legion at War and Battle of the Danube. It is the second of these books that this review is directed towards although to some extent it also covers the first. No reasonably in depth coverage of Roman history, particularly the history of the fictional legions that make up such a large number of the available books on the subject can be understood without grasping the real importance of these two books, particularly, the second.
But the true mastery, in my opinion, can be seen when the author comprehends the distinction between the strategy required to plan and then overcome an adversary, and the tactics employed by the commander to achieve those strategical goals beforehand.
In both books here by Mr Timmes and particularly the second book, one can see how truly evolutionary the Roman way of fighting its many wars had become. Accepting that it had many masterful commanders in its Republican period, that is up to ,say, 220 BCE, before it had to defends itself against an aggressive Carthage as exemplified in the Hamilcar Barca family of generals, including the truly famous Hannibal, the Republican Roman institutional army is not treated very often in the fictional history wars and not nearly so often as the transition into empire as shown by Julius Caesar, the battles covered by Livy (Roman Historian) and other early Empire historians as it should be, in my opinion, are rare indeed.
To read of what must have been a career of fighting by a fictive Roman commander Manius, who fought two brilliant sets of campaigns demonstrates what a fertile field there is yet in Roman studies for historical fiction.
I suggest also that there is a good deal that can be written about Sulla, and his battles, as he seems not to be covered overmuch. But there is always that period of Roman history, largely but not completely ignored such as the period from Justin to Justinian, to the 10th and 11th century Romans who continued what they believed was the good fight until Constantinople was completely overwhelmed by the Caliphate in the 15th century.
But whatever you particular period of the two thousand year rule of Rome's supremacy, these two books would make an excellent centrepiece.
I have long puzzled over many features of legionary arcane information but never have I been able to see it made out of whole cloth, as the writer does in these two excellent and thoroughly unputdownable books.
This author's style took some getting used to. He writes almost as you would expect a history teacher to write, straight-laced, not a lot of flourish, lots of facts, figures and dates. The story line bounces around in time quite a bit which could be distracting. Yet another book with scattered typos. But with all that said, I must admit I really enjoyed the entire series so far (am half way through Zama right now and enjoying it too). While fictional and not 100% historically accurate it has an authenticity, a feel to it which is quite enriching and engaging. Sincerely hope that Timmes keeps writing in this genre and this time period (Republic era, 200 B.C.). I for one will definitely keep buying and reading his works.
